Software Updates From Apple Give A Glimpse Of The Software In A Covid-19 Era

Apple is responding to the COVID-19 crisis across its tech systems with several new apps. Some are intended to combat the novel coronavirus threat directly, as with the new handwashing feature from Apple Watch. In the COVID-19 era, further updates can be seen in a new light. Your Apple Watch, for example, can track your TikTok dances as a “workout,” now you are not going to the gym. A modern aspect of sleep encourages you to take more time. Apple Maps also added a dedicated cycling feature and can show you where hiking trails can be found.

While many of the new features are more reactive, Apple Watch’s hand-washing timer aims to impact consumer behavior directly for the better.

Today, many people still don’t know how long to wash their hands or how to scrub those properly to reduce germ spread. Wearers of Apple Watch will however get a push in the right direction. The new feature that arrives in watchOS 7 later this year will be able to detect when hand washing is started, using machine learning models that detect the movement of the hands of the Watch wearer. It’ll also use recordings to validate the sounds of running water or squishing bubbles.

This will make Apple Watch the first to provide a feature to detect hand washing. When the wearer washes their hands, a countdown timer shows on the front of the watch, so that you can know how long to wash. This will also encourage you to continue with haptics and sounds, almost gamifying the experience. Also, the device will offer a bit of coaching along the way and even push you to finish washing if you stopped.

The feature is small but might have a significant impact on consumer behavior.

The Apple Watch will also push users to take care of other aspects of their wellness and health. While that has always been a key area of interest for Apple’s wearable platform, being healthy in the COVID-19 era takes on a new level of importance.

It also helps users meet their goals for the duration of their sleep by allowing you to set both bedtime and the time to wake up. The sleep tracking feature works in conjunction with the new functionality of iOS 14 “Wind Down,” which will begin to minimize distractions ahead of your bedtime.

A darker, notification-free home screen shows in the evenings and you can start shifting from your wakeful, busy hours to a more comfortable, calmer state.

Wind Down shortcuts help you start relaxing from a meditation app with quiet music or content.

Your iPhone screen dims at bedtime and your Apple Watch goes into sleep mode, shutting off the light. If you want to check the time on a simple face you can wake it up with a tap.

The Watch uses machine learning to track your movements while you sleep, even the rise and fall of your breath, to determine how you sleep. Depending on the monitoring, you can later show the sleep patterns in the Apple Health app.

In the morning, instead of a more distracting auditory warning, you might opt to wake up to a haptic sensation on your hand. Although Apple did not refer to COVID-19 by name when introducing its new sleep tracking features for Apple Watch, the company briefly noted that sleep is helpful in “keeping you healthy.”
