Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that the company is soon going to launch Ray-Ban Smart AR glasses for a better digital experience for users. In collaboration with Ray-Ban owner Essilor Luxottica, Facebook will launch AR smart glasses that will have iconic frames for which Ray-Ban is known for. The announcement was made during the company’s Q2, 2021 earning’s call. The Ray-Ban branded eyewear from Facebook is among the first steps in creating futuristic eyewear that augments the real-world with data or graphics from the Internet.
Zuckerberg further added to his statement that the company is looking forward to provide an unmatched experience for people with these smart glasses through which they can do pretty neat things and the company will continue to make progressive changes in their journey towards full augmented reality glasses in the future. However, no technical specifications were disclosed by the CEO neither he confirmed anything on the specific timeline of the launch period. He also spoke about creating a virtual ‘Metaverse’ wherein users will be able to ‘teleport’ into a digital space using AR and VR technologies. He also stressed on how commerce and ads will be important aspects of revenue going forward.
Apart from working on these smart glasses, the company is also reported to be working on new smartwatch that will integrate features like two cameras and a heart rate monitor. One of the two cameras will be mounted at the front that is supposedly meant for video calling while the other one is meant for capturing footage after being detached from the stainless steel frame. The smartwatch is said to launch sometime in 2022.
