Social media giant Twitter has been fighting a long time to counter the spread of fake news from various accounts on its platform. Fake accounts or spammers do every single thing possible to spread their propaganda over various social networking platforms like Facebook, YouTube and now Twitter. It’s not that Twitter is doing it now, it has been actively countering the activities in the past as well. But with millions of accounts spreading hatred or violence on its platform, it is removing such accounts on a large scale, in fact in millions per week.
Twitter’s head of site integrity, Yoel Roth said in an interview on YouTube that the company is removing 6 million to 7.5 million accounts every week to fight against the people spreading hatred, manipulation, and violence on its platform. Roth went on to say that the number of accounts that get challenged every week amounts from 8 million to 10 million out of which three-quarters of those challenged are permanently removed from its platform. Not only this but Twitter is also limiting the number of accounts that users can follow in a day limiting it to 400 accounts from the previous limit of 1,000 accounts.
Removing such a large number of accounts in a day is not possible humanly. But Twitter using AI to deal with it. For this, if Twitter believes that an account is spam or manipulative based on the content it has posted along with other activities of the account, it sets a challenge for the user. This includes activities like verifying phone number, email, solving a re-CAPTCHA, or resetting your password. Most of the miscreants who spam or spread fake news or hatred are difficult to put all this information as their information could be traced easily with this. Moreover, the user is given a certain time to go ahead with this process or their account is permanently removed from its platform.
Certainly not!!
Considering the data given the social networking website, almost 99.87 percent of the users do not follow 400 accounts per day. It is something only spammers or in some cases, a user seeking for promotion or the one who want to increase its followers would do. Twitter’s spokesperson said in a statement, “ As a part of our commitment to building a healthy service, we remain focused on stopping spam and abuse on Twitter.” However, this is not applied to the verified users. They rather have a limit of 1000 follows in a day.
