Android P Developer Preview, the most ambitious OS of California based tech giant Google has been rolled out in the Google I/O 2018. There are lot more to talk about the various features and enhancements in the user experience, but some other speculations are also there. Google will no more be going to support the apps built for Android 4.1 and previous OS.
This is the direct indication that Android P, the OS will not entertain apps for Android 4.1 and prior versions. It will start blocking the old apps and apps meant for use in the prior versions. This leads mobile application developers to target a minimum API level 17 similar to the Android 4.2 version. Now, developers need to focus on it and strictly follow the minimum API level 17 for any further apps. Apps below this API level will stop functioning one the Android P 1.0 will release.
What will happen when a user gets an old app; Google gives warning, “This app was built for an older version of Android and may not work properly. Try checking for updates, or contact the developer.” Google also mentioned that it will new apps submitted to Google’s Play Store should follow the criteria. Developers should target the Android versions not more than a year old. So, the minimum supported apps would be Android 4.2 and the new app submissions should focus on Android 8.0 Oreo and above.
Android P will bring some exciting new features, which you can’t get access to the older versions of OS. The feasibility and compatibility will be a concern, mobile application developers and device makers should keep it in mind. This raises serious concerns for clients, who got their app developed for the previous OS and who have apps compatible with Android 4.1 or lower. They need to get their apps updated for Android P or new versions. And should get it done before Android P 1.0 hits the ground.
However, this is not clear whether older apps will stop functioning completely or Google will just put a pop-up warning message and a user can access it. Chances are more for a complete block as security and safety became a serious thing and users are suspicious about it. In fact, the hardware compatibility is also a reason as older devices are not able to fully function with the new Android P OS. If a user still uses it, this will crash down the device and hamper the reputation of Google and other brands at the same time.
This announcement has increases the burden on developers as well as the Android application development company in India too. They need to re-calibrate their workforce for the upcoming needs of app development. One of the leading app development companies Fluper accepted this challenge in the very first place. The app development is in the pilot-phase aiming Android P OS.
Fluper’s research team foreseen this updates long before, accordingly, they have updated their development section accordingly. The apps developed in recently are keeping in mind for the minimum API level 17, so their clients won’t get any trouble as of now. And, now the focus has been shifted to work for the latest OS versions. It has also worked in the cross-platform environment considering the limitless app development environment. Future apps are not going to bound in a particular OS or platform.
Even, technically; this is also needed due to the new features introduced in it. Android P also has the much-hyped notch and multi-camera support too. Apps are also going to the next level; AR and AI enabled apps are hitting the ground. Google also introduced the gesture-based navigation; this also needs the latest OS. Mobile application developers also need to focus on this latest development. Gesture-based navigation will remove the scope of using a physical home button or return button; your gesture will do the task.
The popular AI based mobile game Pokemon and similar will also be going to be the next generation apps; they require a comfortable environment. A Pokemon switch could be the next thing you would like to enjoy on your mobile phone, interestingly an old device with an older OS won’t let you enjoy this game.
The whole equation has been changed now, this is time to bid goodbye to the old OS Android 4.1 and start focusing on the latest versions. This also increases the performance and user experience which has never been before.
